Painting as construction. I like to explore patterns and structures as viewed from the extremes of almost microscopic close-ups, and at great distance (as views of the ground from miles above)–patterns and structures structures rich in details, which to our eyes, seem almost unrelated to the the visual world on a human scale. I find myself drawn to images that have broken up into these macro and micro details, a crumbling and dis-integration of our visual world. Just beginning to get to the details on this painting.

Lurching this way and that, the hole inside that wants to be filled, wanting and not knowing what, driven and not knowing why or by what. I make art, and strain to set limits to the self-destructive excess.
The only peace, in dreams.
A detail:

This is from April, 2016. Did a little more work on it, and mounted and framed it. Ink, Silverpoint and Tombow over metalpoint ground, on a weathered piece of plywood. 76.2×50.8cm (30″x20″)

40.6 x 50.8cm (16×20) Acrylic on canvas, ink. I’ve been working on getting more contrast in tonal values. I check by viewing in black and white. This one passes. The tonal value of the 3 disks is almost identical if you view this in black and white. Good example of how cool hues recede, and warm hues come forward.

40.6 x 50.8cm (16″x20″) Acrylic on canvas panel. Last of the 4 canvas panel paintings I picked up from the trash, and painted over. I’m hoping it wasn’t oil paint I covered over. Was pretty thin–not impasto, and seemed to be a single layer, so hoping the gesso won’t peel away from the painting underneath. I’ll leave that for the museum restorationists.

Here’s a detail, close up.

40.6 x 50.8cm Acrylic on canvas panel. The few times I’ve traveled by air, have left a deep, visual impression. Bolstered by satellite photos. The series I’m working on now are like images from space… stripped of clouds. This also is another step toward integrating what I’ve been doing with my pen & ink and watercolor, and drawings, into my larger acrylic paintings.
